Deceased

Deceased member

When a  member dies, the clerk may or may not know the exact death date. In either case, it's best to update the member's record in eAdventist to prevent them from being included in directories, mailing lists, etc. If you do not know the exact death date, use "1" for any unknown day and "1" (i.e. January) for any unknown month. This can be updated later if you discover the exact date.

1
Find the member's record
2
Click the "Change Status" button
3
Select "Deceased" from the  "Change to" drop-down, enter the death date and click the "Save" button.
4
If there is a surviving spouse, change his/her "Marital status" to "Widowed".
To correct a death date, click the "Change Status" button, keep "Undo last change" selected and click the "Save" button. Finally, re-enter the death with the correct date.

Deceased nonmember

eAdventist does not track statistics for nonmembers, so the nonmember can simply be "deleted". The death date can be recorded in Notes, if you wish.

1
Find the nonmember's record
2
Click the "Change Status" button
3
Choose "deleted on", enter the death date and click the "Save" button.
4
If there is a surviving spouse, change his/her "Marital status" to "Widowed".

Labels, directories & subscriptions

A "deceased" person will be  automatically excluded from the following:

  • Person Labels
  • Officer Labels
  • Member Labels (for union paper subscription)
  • Church directory
  • Conference directory

If the "deceased" person was the Primary Contact and there are other people in the family, a new Primary Contact should be chosen to ensure that the family does not miss issues of the union paper or Adventist World.

Social Security Death Index

The Social Security Administration publishes a Death Index that lists death dates of US citizens. Both  www.genealogybank.com and www.ancestry.com provide tools for searching this data. However, ancestry.com now requires a paid subscription. Genealogybank.com also requires a paid subscription for full access but provides some search capability if you create a free account.

As of 2013, these sites are no longer allowed to display SSDI records for individuals who have died within the previous 3 years.
